  • June 22-25: Detroit Actor’s Theatre Company presents Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Doors at 8:00 p.m. | Performances at 9:00 p.m. PLEASE NOTE: This rock opera incorporates video projection and will start when it is dark out. It seems especially fitting that the first rock opera, created as a concept album at the end of the turbulent '60s, should have at its center a social and political rebel. Jesus' meteor-like rise in renown provides, as the title suggests, a parallel to contemporary celebrity worship. As his radical teachings are evermore embraced, Judas increasingly questions the enlightened motives of this new prophet, resulting in betrayal. Christ's final days are dramatized with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge and explosive theatricality. Propelled by a stirring score (Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice), by turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender, “Jesus Christ Superstar” illuminates the transcendent power of the human spirit with a passion that goes straight to the heart. Sponsored by:  First American Title Insurance Company – Commercial Team.
  • July 28: Opera MODO presents “Hansel and Gretel.” Doors at 6:30 p.m. | Performance at 7:30 p.m. A pair of angelic voiced siblings bored and hungry for dinner. Their exhausted mother, who angrily sends them out of the house. The Sandman and the Dew Fairy, who calm them and watch over them as they sleep. And a predatory, saccharine-sweet, child-crunching witch whose favorite food has just starting nibbling at her treats. Will these delicious cherubs be her next meal or will they find a way to outwit her and escape? Join us this summer in the park for Opera MODO’s sweet and sassy production of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel to find out! Stay afterwards for the film, “Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory.” Film begins at dusk. Sponsored by: Rebuild Group and Tom Delaney, Midtown Detroit, Inc. Board Member.

HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical comes to New Center Park

The Detroit Actor’s Theatre Company continues its 2015-16 season with HAIR: The Tribal Love-Rock Musical at New Center Park in Detroit, which will run from August 18 through August 20. First American Title Company, Midtown Detroit, Inc. and The Detroit Actor's Theatre Company are the sponsors of this production, allowing it to be free and open to the public. The musical is directed by DATC Creative Director Mindy Grissom.

HAIR follows the story of the “Tribe”, a group of politically active, long-haired hippies, living a bohemian life in New York City and fighting against the Vietnam War. Claude Bukowski (Billy Ravaeu), George Berger (Jefferey Vincent), Sheila Franklin (Deanna Wesley), and their many friends and roommates struggle to balance their young lives, loves, and the sexual revolution with their rebellion against the war, racial conflicts, their conservative parents and society. Ultimately, Claude must decide whether to resist the draft and continue life with his like-minded friends, or to succumb to the pressures of his parents (and country) to serve in Vietnam.

When you think of HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, many images immediately spring to mind... hippies, drugs, bell bottom jeans, iconic songs like Aquarius, The controversial "nude" scene, crazy chaotic energy, and of course, lots of unruly hair. All these things are true.

It's also true that in 1968 HAIR was the first rock musical on Broadway, with a ground-breaking format that paved the way for the modern non-linear concept musical. It was the first Broadway show to feature full nudity, the first same-sex kiss and the first fully racially integrated cast. Most importantly, HAIR represented the voice of a generation, altered the social and sexual landscape in our country, and ultimately helped turn public opinion against the Vietnam War.

The costumes and dialogue firmly plant this show in the late 1960's, but the issues it confronts are timeless. Racism, freedom of speech, drugs, sexual repression, war, peace, corruption in politics, environmental protection, and LGBT rights.

The DATC strives to break barriers and build up a family in Detroit through their unique deliverance of music and theater. For more information on the company, visit the DATC website, thedatc.org.

Show Dates and Information:
August 18-20, 2016. All performances start at 7:00pm. Gates open at 6:00pm. This event is free and open to the public.

New Children's Theatre Show Just Added!

New Center Park is pleased to add one additional theatre show to our Summer Entertainment Series by Wayne State University's Hilberry Theatre Company:  The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. A comedy by Robert Kauzlaric, Paul Gilvary, and William Rush. Based on the book by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith.

You thought you knew the story of The Three Little Pigs... You thought wrong. This is the story of the 3 little pigs from the perspective of Alexander T. Wolf. The wolf is trying to set the story straight of how he came to be 'big and bad'. At the beginning of the play he's cooking a cake for his grandmother's birthday, but he's run out of sugar. He goes to ask his neighbors, the pigs, for some sugar. They all say no to him, and as a result of a sneeze, he 'accidentally' blows the first two pigs' houses down. Since they're already dead he eats them. The third pig's house (made of bricks) does not suffer the same fate. Mr. Wolf is arrested and the third pig survives. So Mr. Wolf is in jail and his poor sweet granny gets no birthday cake.

June 17 | Doors @ 7PM. Performance @ 8PM.
